Drink to That
Breeze into spring with A fresh vermouth spritz
By Kathryn Davé
THE BEST COCKTAILS come with a backstory. Legend holds that the Acqua di Neve—Italian for “snow water”—earned its name for the cooling refreshment it offered to tired, sweaty vineyard workers taking a break in the heat of the day.
The three-ingredient spritz combines Contratto Bianco vermouth, ginger ale, and fresh sage on top. Unlike some cocktail garnishes, the sage sprig is unskippable; its aroma plays a significant role in the drink’s taste. The light, low-ABV sipper is a breeze to stir together when friends drop by or the slant of spring sunlight is just right for porch sitting—no hard work required.
Acqua di Neve
1.5 oz Contratto Bianco vermouth
3 oz high-quality ginger ale
1 fresh sage sprig
Fill a rocks glass with ice. Stir in the vermouth, then top with the ginger ale. Stir gently. Lightly smack a fresh sage leaf or two against your palm, then float it on top of the drink for garnish. Enjoy.
Contratto Bianco vermouth ($30) is available at The Community Tap, 217 Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville.
